A January Song

"The robin flew from his springing spray of ivy on to the top of the wall and he opened his beak and sang a loud, lovely trill, merely to show off. Nothing in the world is quite as adorably lovely as a robin when he shows off - and they are nearly always doing it"

~ Frances Hodgson Burnett, 'The Secret Garden'.

  2. I'd be lost without my robins. Constant companions and what fun they are.

  3. Robins are the bravest birds here too, coming to see what I am doing if I have a trowel in my hand. A secret garden - how we all long for one of those.

  4. I left a comment yesterday, Anna, but it seems to have disappeared! I was saying that apart from the wardrobe this could be me in the picture as I have been having some most engaging conversations with our own robin recently. Thanks for sharing the quotation and picture, which not surprisingly make we want to read the bok again

  5. This is just beautiful, Anna. Yesterday I was watching 5 robins chasing each other round the garden and bird bath and competing most fiercely in a sort of European robin song contest. I couldn't tire of watching them so cheerful were their antics.

  6. How true there is nothing quite as uplifting as hearing a robin showing off.

  7. This was one of my favourite books as a child. Robins are the best of companions in the garden.

  9. I love the innocence of this drawing and that it doesn't involve a kid sitting indoors glued to a screen. :o)
