Just Now

my favourite is galanthus elwesii 'Rosemary Burnham' which has opened up this week. It could well be something else when more 'drops open over the next couple of weeks. Brian from Our Garden@19 asked recently whether I had a favourite. How do you choose from a bevvy of beauties? I think though with some agonising that I could probably narrow it down to half a dozen or so, which might be the subject for another post.

However for now 'Rosemary Burnham' is my leading lady. She is a snowdrop that I fell in love with at first sight albeit long distance when I saw her on various web sites. She was first discovered growing in Canada in the late 1960s by a lady of the same name. It was some considerable time before she was available to buy here and intitially the price she sold for was exorbitant. However after patiently waiting for several years I was able to treat myself to a dormant bulb last summer. I have been holding my breath since and was most relieved to see a green nose poking through the compost last month. As she is new I'm not sure whether she is flowering early/on time/late especially given the weird winter weather we've experienced. Like most virescent snowdrops she has the reputation of being a bit miffy to grow so please, please keep your fingers crossed for my bulb.

  2. I will keep my fingers crossed, I never saw before such a stunning snowdrop. I shall make a note of the name, may be once it's for sale in Holland against a reasonable price, haha.
    I'm going to follow you.
    Regards, Janneke

    1. Thanks for visiting Janneke and for your kind words. I think that she will be available for sale in Holland where I think that there are one or two specialist snowdrop nurseries. I will be over to visit your blog soon,

  5. She is lovely Anna. I hope she likes her spot in your garden enough to stick around. I could never say what my favourite plant is - it changes daily in spring!

    1. She's still in a pot Cathy and maybe for sometime. Planting location still to be decided. My favourites plant has to be snowdrops at this time of year :)

  6. She is a beauty, quite unusual I imagine with the green stripes on the petals. I guess my favourite would be which ever is looking the best at anyone time. (Fickle!!)

    1. Now that sounds like logical thinking Brian - far from fickle.

  7. Such beautiful images! Usually snowdrops don't appear here until late February or early March, but we're having such warm weather that I wouldn't be surprised to see one pop up this weekend.

    1. Thanks for your comment Rose. This is a new to me snowdrop so I can't tell whether she's early or late this year. We're having the same mild weather too which must be most confusing for flowers.

  8. Isn't she lovely, Anna?! I think our breath will always be bated rather more with those that are known to be miffy...you must be so thrilled to have her flowering. I have seen pictures of her 'greener' than this but I guess that might vary from year to year or possibly with maturity? I plan to take pictures of mine this afternoon

    1. Thanks Cathy. I'm delighted to have seen her in flower even though if it just proves to be a brief acquaintance. I know what you mean about her being 'greener' in some photos and your theories could well be right. It might also be a matter of light or lack of it when I took the photo. She does look greener in the flesh to my eyes.

  9. I fell in love with Rosemary the first time I saw her in the flesh last year at the Dunblane early bulb show. Luckily for my bank balance no vendor had her for sale!! I hope she does well for you Anna. All my fingers and toes are firmly crossed for you.

    1. She is definitely most eye-catching Angie but even more so in the flesh. Her price has come down considerably over the years so you might find her at Dunblane soon at the sort of price that doesn't make you wince too much. I winced slightly but have got to an age now where I'm going to spoil myself occasionally.
